SE Qld Autumn racing

With the latest blood tests showing more iron deficiency "issues", my racing has again been sidelined, and I am back to spectating for a bit.  At least I can still ride my bike, so there is no real reason for me to complain!
Last weekend were the Dutton-North Lakes Criteriums, with a predominantly rain-free and crash-free day, with just the occasional 'incident'.

Yesterday was the second round of the "Foodworks" Qld Team Series - at the scenic town of Beaudesert.

Although the series is limited to Elite A and Masters A riders only, it is nice to see so many teams (16) participating enthusiastically this year,

and hopefully this is just the start of some awesome teams racing for years to come.

The bonus this weekend was the perfectly blue sky yesterday,

with a cool morning becoming an awesomely warm sunny day.

After Beaudesert, the teams will head to Miles and the Bunya Mountains for Round 3,

Kingaroy for Round 4, Warwick for Round 5, Maryborough for Round 6 and finish in Brisbane with a criterium for Round 7.

Blue jersey and a win for a deserving Australian

In case you missed the news during this last week or so...

Cadel Evans won his first stage race for the year at the Tirreno-Adriatico this week!

Hopefully there will be more wins to come for him in 2011.

Bikes!

When I used to scuba dive a lot, I loved photos of fish and other undersea life.  Now that the main hobby is cycling, I love photos of bikes!...

Check out this web site if you have some time...

In the meantime, I have respectfully "stolen" some photos for you...
And I will end this post with a bit of humor (not my photo either), but a reminder to be safe out there on the roads...

Easy riding

As someone recently pointed out to me, I already live on a Peninsula, so why do I want to go visit another one? Yes it is true… Qld’s Redcliffe is a Peninsula, but Victoria’s Bellarine Peninsula is quite different to where I regularly reside and train… so maybe it is simply a case of “grass is greener on the other side of the fence” for me.

I had the awesome opportunity to do some riding around this area when I travelled down to race at ‘Bay Crits’ in January.

Then, as it happened, when I returned home, the floods swept through SE Qld, and lots of other stuff consequently ensued, and I never really got the chance to write a quick report on the vicinity.

Apart from being a very scenic area (and the weather just happened to be awesome too), it was also a very effortless place to ride around, and not get lost!

Yes, Nikki and I were fortunate enough to get a ‘guided’ tour (thanks for arranging it Amy!) by some of the “local” riders from the O2 Networks Team and also from Team Sky (Simon Gerrans and Greg Henderson… not dropping names or anything!).

However, it is also a particularly straightforward region just to go for a solo bike ride around, and still get back to where you started, even without the aid of a GPS.
And there are so many places to check out… Portarlington, Ocean Grove, Queenscliffe, Barwon Heads, St Leonards, and even Torquay.

The roads are well signposted; the Victorian motorists are (mostly) very courteous; and most of the road shoulders are really nice and wide (and often you get to ride on a bit of hot mix too!).

Anyway, if you get some time, the area is certainly worth a visit; especially in January when the Jayco Bay Criteriums are on.

New Bike... Thanks Velo, Thanks TREK

Not much to say (... I am almost speechless!) except that I am completely delighted with the new 'pony'...

Trek Madone Project One custom frame...

definitely worth the 3 month wait to get it here to Australia. (Ordered it in November, due in late Feb, and then it arrived early!).
Thanks so much to Brant and Sasha for helping me with the choice (nicest bike sales people on the planet, and I am not biased just because I get to work with you!) and to Bevan for building it up for me (best bike mechanic ever, even if you are from NZ!).  Thanks also to Kerry from Trek Bicycles Australia.

Just beautiful.  Can you tell I am in love with bikes!

Rebuilding

It has only been a week since the Brisbane River reached its peak and the residents of inner Brisbane were faced with just the start of probably their biggest life-challenging event ever.

I have been lucky, and am like a fair few Brisbanites who either live on a hill, or live far enough away from the river (north or south) to have escaped its deluge.

Although the waters have now receeded in Brisbane, the next huge challenge is the clean up...

removing all that river mud, the destroyed belongings and buildings, and then the reconstruction...  getting things 'back to normal'.

But what is "normal" now for many of these families and businesses?

And will there ever be a "normal" again?

Throughout Queensland, and now in many parts of Victoria, many others are also facing (or have already recently faced) the tough task of dealing with rising waters, and then the long cleaning and restoration after this.

Ironic too, how not very long ago many parts of Australia were in severe drought, and we were concerned about water in short supply.

While this natural disaster and its consequences are distressing and overwhelming at times, it is also rewarding to see so many people assist and support each other throughout this time.

Australians are naturally strong and resilient.
And while it will not be easy in the weeks and months and years ahead, our passion, enthusiasm and dedication to helping each other move forward will continue.

"This is about of the rebuilding of lives. I want to make sure each pothole, each home, each life is going to be rebuilt." - Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale.

Thanks to Aaron Sparshott, Jon Haysom and Paul Sickling for some of these photos.
