Less than a month to go to KPCC's Cunningham Classic

An iconic SE Qld race. The first time I attempted it, I was a real “rookie”. I had only recently started road racing and didn’t know how challenging the race would end up being. The beginning can be tough. It’s also a real mixed bag. Having done it a few times now, I know that it can be a relatively easy run into the KOM, or it can be a really demanding section if everyone decides to push the pace. The KOM itself is often a section of “natural selection”. You’ve either got the legs on the day to be up there with the front group or you don’t. And then the fun begins after the KOM. With half the race still to go, and you have the rolling hills and headwinds to contend with. But out of adversity comes the rewards. It’s one of those races that’s truly character building. I distinctly remember rolling turns in my first Cunningham with another 4 other C grade level riders (3 ladies and one gentleman) from the top of the KOM to the finish. We’d missed out on going with the attack on the KOM and had to settle for being one of the chasing groups on the road. Everyone did their fair share for the remaining 40km or so. It was a fulfilling feeling to cross the line together as comrades, even though we didn’t know each other at all when the race started earlier that day. People I met as a result of that first Cunningham are still friends today, and that’s of great significance to me.

If you can't do it in 2015, consider the Cunningham Classic for 2016.

Sizzling Summer Series 2015, rounds 1 and 2

Our team racing debut for 2015 happened at round one of Logan Cycling Club's annual SSS.
Ladies (A grade) racing for Koiled-Petbarn-Seight during this early criterium season include:
Melanie Parker, Alex O'Dea, Faye Goodyear, Rachel Edwards (team captain) and myself.

25 women were there to complete in women's A in round one.  Pretty good numbers for a local Brisbane race. Local teams included Data #3, Campos and Koiled-Petbarn.  A few NRS and international riders were there to keep us honest too (Kat Garfoot and Macey Stewart from Orica GreenEdge, Hayley Jones from Bicycle Superstore, Nicole Moerig from Boss Racing, and Ellen Skerritt from Rochelle Gilmore's new Aussie High 5 development team).
The pace was high from the start, with lots of attacks (as is typical for the SSS series).  No breakaways stuck, and the bunch sprint saw Macey finish a comfortable first, with Hayley second, Nicole third, Faye (Koiled-Petbarn) fourth, and Rachel (Koiled-Petbarn) sixth.

First prime Macey (Orica), second prime Zoe Watters (Campos).

Round two was similar, with good numbers of ladies racing, and the pace was kept high for much of the race.

No-one was keen to see a breakaway go, so it came down to a bunch sprint again.

This time we were slightly more prepared than 2 weeks earlier,

and we gave Faye a good lead-out, so that she could demonstrate her developing sprint prowess.

Faye (Koiled) first, Macey (Orica) second, Nicole (Boss) third, Rachel fourth.

First prime Macey (Orica), second prime Jazzy Hurikino (Campos).

This means we head into the third and final round of the series this weekend with two riders in the top six.

Should make for an exciting final race.

Qld masters state road champs 2014

Why blog when someone else can do it for you?  ;)
My posts have been absent of late, partly due to keen blogger Danny Graves of ESi Photography doing some work for me...
check his latest work out at the following links on Peloton Cafe -

More recently though were the Qld State road champs last weekend.  These races once again demonstrated the growth in women's cycling in the last 12 months.  Back in 2011, I raced this course with 4 other starters.  This year, there were 25 women on the start line!
The race was tough and tactical from the start.  After one lap there were still many contenders in the field, and the eventual winners needed to put the "hurt on" during the second lap to see who would stay and who would not.
Congratulations to all the ladies who raced with me.  It was a good day out, and even better if you happened to come home with a medal!
On Sunday, Koiled-Tineli rider Cat Newell (winner of my grade WMAS2) did the "double" by winning the Elite women's race also.  A tremendous result! :)

Final results for Masters Women from Saturday were:
WMAS1
1 42W Brooke SHEPPEARD Kirsty Broun Racing 1:43:57

QSM at ladies masters nationals

From Oct 3 to 6, the Cycling Australia Masters Champs were held in Goulburn.  Despite adverse conditions and some strong competition, the QSM women's team did more than hold their own after their recent victories in the Qld State Champs.

Medals of note included:
* WMAS2 Jessica Toghill - bronze RR (- Jessica is also our newest QSM recruit!)

* WMAS3 Jane Walker - gold criterium, gold RR

* WMAS5 Jane Youdan - gold criterium, gold RR.

(and I will also mention Simone Grounds from the Bicycle Riders women's team... another Qld'er winning medals down south!)

What else can I say?  Well done to all!  All those early mornings and consistent training have paid off.  So nice to see effort rewarded.

Meanwhile criterium season is ramping up a notch in Qld, with Jemma, Claire, Jessica and myself looking forward to upcoming events including the Northshore criterium, Noosa, and the Brisbane Blast criterium.

Green girls have the Edge

One of the highlights of last weekend's trip to Victoria was seeing how well the new Green Edge teams are racing already.

Sure, there were a lot of 'expectations' placed upon the new teams in all the races (mens, womens and U23).  But just because you are expected to win, doesn't mean you will.

Lots of things have to go right on the day, to come away with the gold.

And the Green Edge teams faced a lot of tough competition... just as an example... in the women's road race, they went up against girls from Jayco-AIS, VIS, Specialized-lulemon, Rabobank, Nutrixxion, SASI, Suzuki-Trek, and many other strong individuals... many of these girls had a good chance of taking the title away from Green Edge.

On a personal note, while my spectating this year at Nationals was award-winning, my own racing performance was definitely not.  A combination of 'not-enough-power' and 'not-the-right-head-space' led to my premature retirement from the race.  Not making any excuses though, I did a solid 3+ months of training and am happy with the preparation up to the day of the race.  One of these I days I still hope to get to finish this race, but it seems that for the meantime, I have a lot more 'living and learning' to do.

Leaving on a jet plane...

But I do know when I'll be back again...

It will be a quick trip to Ballarat but hopefully a good one!...  Stay tuned.

Power... finally...

After considering it for over 18 months, I finally splashed out and bought myself a power meter a few weeks ago... with Sram/Quarq cranks (... thanks Velo Bicycles).

It seems to be working well (very easy to use with my Garmin Edge 500), and the data so far is quite interesting, especially from my last few races at murrarie, synergy and pimpama.  All I can say is that a thousand watts is a lot of power... (I will be lucky to ever hit that number!)... and I have a new found respect for riders such as Cancellara who can put out huge numbers well above 1000 watts.

Now I just have to go through the process of setting the zones, and finding my FTP (with help from coach Nick Formosa).  Unfortunately (since I really dislike time trials) this involves quite a few hard efforts this week, including a 30 minute TT.  Oh well, at least once it is all done, I will have some more useful numbers to base my future training on!

And on a slightly different topic, but still within the cycling theme, good luck to all the Australians at the UCI world champs in Denmark this week!!!

Fusion...

"The process or result of joining two or more things together to form a single entity."

Well I suppose that's what our criterium on Sunday was... a joining of lots of women's grades together into one race...

only 30 minutes long, it was over very quickly...

but at least the sun came out, and it was not a wet and wintery day like the day before.

The annual Scenic Rim Tour was due to be held this weekend, but not enough entries this year, forced the event's cancellation...

lucky HPRW is holding club racing this weekend, and the Charles Coin race (held by UQ) is on next weekend.

Thanks to Morbo and Fusion for the photos.
And on another note,
some Aussie women are once again doing well overseas...

in the Internationale Thüringen Rundfahrt der Frauen race...
Vicki Whitelaw was 2nd and Shara Gillow 4th in last night's stage.

Let's hope for more good results this weekend.
Thanks to Cycling News for the photos.

Nice way to start a New Year

So the 'original' plan was to take a quick trip down to Ballarat in early January to have another racing 'experience' in the heat on the tough Mt Buninyong course.

However, things that I plan seem to have a habit of transforming themselves into something else...

and in only the last few weeks, this initial plan has changed into travelling down to Victoria a bit earlier, to race for 4 days at "Bay Crits" (the 2011 Jayco Bay Criteriums) as well...

and just today, we will be adding in the Geelong Amy's Ride on Sunday morning too!

Rather than one week off work to do "just" one race, I now get one week off work to do 5 races, watch even more racing, and ride in support of the Amy Gillett Foundation!

Accordingly, if you know what I am like, you know that I am also thinking that this is a great way to start 2011. :)

To any and all of you reading my blog, have a super end to 2010, and I wish you all the best for 2011.
